Roulette wouldn’t be as fascinating if it weren’t for the many betting opportunities it provides. Whereas column bets may not be the first choice for offline and online roulette players, they are still safer bets to make than any of the inside bets.
Furthermore, a column bet offers better payout odds than other outside bets, the group in which it belongs. Columns are very interesting wagers in roulette, since they do not focus on the numbers on the wheel, but rather on the numbers on the table.
Here are the steps to take if you want to place a successful columns bet at roulette.

Get Familiar With the Roulette Betting Table
To be able to make any roulette bet, not just columns bets, you should know how the roulette table layout looks like and what each area represents.
Every bet has a designated area and these are easily recognizable. The inside bets area comes down to the individual numbers. Outside bets are located outside this region.
Below the numbers you will usually see areas reserved for odd/even bets, red and black, as well as high and low. You will also see three areas on the side with 2:1 written on them. These sectors are meant for columns bets.

Columns Bet Explained
What does it mean to place a bet on a column in roulette? Well, the way the numbers are presented in the table layout is in three columns – long rows that stretch across the table. They look like this:
- 1st Column: 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, 34
- 2nd Column: 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32, 35
- 3rd Column: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36
So, the player will try to predict which column the winning number will belong to. Each row contains 12 numbers, so you will be betting on all of the 12 numbers.
If the ball lands on one of the numbers in the column you have selected, you will receive a payout of 2 to 1. The zero and the double zero do not belong to any of the three columns. When they show, consider your wager lost.
A player can choose to play one or the rows or all three in a single round.

Placing the Bet
How do you place a column bet on the roulette betting table? It is the simplest thing. First, load your favorite roulette game or join the table if you are playing live. Select the chips you want to wager during the betting time and place them on the area for the row bet/s.
Once the betting period expires, the wheel will spin and the ball will determine if the winning number will be on the row/s you’ve selected. Playing with a single-zero wheel and table give you better odds, as the house edge is only 2.70%.
