Having heard about the Orphelins bet at roulette, you probably already know that this particular bet belongs to the specific group of bets called French, announced or call bets. This category of wagers is fully based on the positions of the numbers on the wheel and has no association with their numeric values or their colour.

The Orphelins bet is similar in nature to the other French bets – Tier du Cylindre, Voisins du Zero, Jeu Zero and Finales en plein – in the sense that it covers a specific section of the wheel. To knowledgeably place an Orphelins bet (or Orphans in English) you need to do the following:

Play European or French Roulette, not American

Orphelins is not a bet you will find available in a game of American Roulette. Therefore, you must find a suitable game of European Roulette or French Roulette with a racetrack layout and a set of call bets to choose from.

As a roulette player, most of the time you will see the standard roulette betting table with the numbers presented in three rows. The racetrack is an alternative betting layout which sees the numbers presents just as they are on the wheel.

This secondary betting board has a shape of a racetrack and is made out of various sections, each representing a bet. Orphelins is one of them.

Orphelins Bet Explained

Orphelins or Orphans are the numbers that are left on the wheel/racetrack that do not belong to Voisins and Tiers. So, this bet covers two slices of the wheel with 8 numbers in total: 17, 34, 6 and 1, 20, 14, 31 and 9. There are two variations of the Orphelins bet, Orphelins en Plein and Orphelins en Cheval.

The Cheval Version is more common and it makes use of splits. It takes 5 chips to make the wager by placing split bets on 6/9, 14/17, 17/20 and 31/34 and a straight up bet on 1. Orphelins en Plein, on the other hand, requires 8 chips and 8 straight up bets on each of the numbers.
