Along with the variety of inside and outside bets there are many more traditional bets on number combinations in roulette. These number combinations are located in specific sectors of the wheel. These bets are referred to as call bets or, more accurately, announced bets.

This type of bets relies on the way particular numbers are located next to each other on the wheel. Thirds of the Wheel bet falls under this category alongside Orphelins, Jeu Zero, Les Finales and Voisins Du Zero.

The French name for the Thirds of the Wheel bet is Tiers Du Cylindre, but you will often see it labeled just as Tiers. If you care to play this bet, here’s what you need to do.

Pick European or French Roulette

Not every roulette game comes complete with call bets. That’s why it is important to check before you start wagering and keep in mind that you will not be able to play Thirds of the Wheel in an American Roulette game.

You need to seek out European Roulette with racetrack and call bets or the French Roulette variant. Since American Roulette features one zero and two zeroes, the call bets cannot be applied on the wheel.

Brief Yourself on the Racetrack Layout

To be able to understand the Tiers Du Cylindre bet and properly use it in the game, one needs to be familiar with the racetrack layout.

This is not the standard layout for roulette bets; it is a secondary betting table that works as an additional betting area for these special bets. It has an elliptic shape, like a racetrack, and has all the numbers placed in the same order like on the wheel itself.

The reason why this is important is that this layout is divided into sectors which represent different French bets. Knowing which section of the layout belongs to which bet makes it easier to place the desired wager.

Thirds of the Wheel Bet Explained

The name of the bet gives you a hint that it is a multi-number bet that covers nearly a third of the wheel. It covers precisely 12 numbers which are located on the opposite side from the single zero and the numbers surrounding it. Therefore, this area is the opposite of the Voisins du Zero bet. Included numbers are 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16 and 33.

To place a Tiers bet, one needs 6 chips on splits. One chip is placed on each of the following splits: 5/8, 10/11, 13/16, 23/24, 27/30 and 33/36. The payout for each of the splits is 17:1.

Placing the Thirds of the Wheel Bet

It is easy to place a Tiers bet – no more difficult than any other call bet.  If you are playing at a land-based casino, announce the bet to the croupier who will place the chips at corresponding positions for you.

If you are playing online, pick your preferred French or European roulette table and wait for the betting time to open. When it is time to place bets, choose the racetrack layout and click on the Thirds of the Wheel area after having previously set the value of the chips you will be using. The bet is placed and you will have to wait for the spin to end to see if you’ve won or not.
